Gupshup
Trendy Indian fusion in Flatiron, NYC
I am so happy to share that my sister just got engaged this past weekend! Because of this, her fiancée’s family and my family came together to celebrate in NYC, and of course, eat.
What’s a celebration without food??
We ate at an upscale Indian restaurant named Gupshup in the flatiron district in NYC. This restaurant was selected for us because we have a group of omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans. Shoutout to A.B. for finding this spot. Gupshup successfully catered to all. The menu featured some authentic Indian and fusion dishes, as well as some trendy vegan alternatives such as the jackfruit curry.
By the time we arrived at dinner, we were all ready to feast. We immediately put our appetizer and drink orders in, splitting the crispy okra & guacamole, tandoori cauliflower, and Amritsari chole tikki. I also treated myself to a mango lassi that came in a beautiful enamel cup. The crispy okra & guacamole was delicious. The okra was crunchy and went well with the guacamole surprisingly. The accompaniments were pickled onion and wasabi sesame seeds. While I generally do not like pickled onions, the acidity worked well in this dish. Unfortunately, I was unable to taste the wasabi sesame seeds. The dish was great regardless.
The whole cauliflower head was very flavorful, but lacking some salt. The waiter mentioned that this is marinated in yogurt, prior to cooking. I had never tried something like this even though I consume cauliflower regularly! It came with pickled onion, ginger honey, and cilantro. I would suggest adding a little more ginger honey, and salt as I mentioned before. People forget that salt is a flavor enhancer. It is necessary to taste the rest of these aromatic spices that are featured in this dish.
The third appetizer was the Amritsari chole tikki. This was so delicious! The dish had crispy potato fritters, curried chickpeas, thinly shaved green apple, and tamarind sauce. It was a medley of sweet, sour, and savory ingredients. I can’t wait to get this again sometime.
When it comes to Indian food, my family loves to share a couple of entrees. In this case we ordered the Sri Lankan jackfruit curry, Himalayan morels, curried chickpeas, and black daal. The rest of the group ordered goat, lamb, chicken, and tajin. The tajin especially caught my eye because of the beautiful presentation, and fragrant cumin seeds.
I loved the presentation of the jackfruit curry and I generally love coconut-based curries. This dish, however, didn’t work for me. I liked the concept of having jackfruit fritters (they called them kofta), but the dish was much too sweet for me.
The Himalayan morels was a wild mushroom dish in a thick sauce. I don’t want to assume it was curry because it wasn’t labeled as such. This was super flavorful, but one of the dishes I have the least information on. The menu labeled it as “wild mushrooms, chives.” Super tasty with basmati rice, and great textures from all the mushroom types. Morels aren’t my favorite, but I enjoyed the other wild mushrooms. This was very umami, and I would not be able to pinpoint that it is a Himalayan dish.
The curried chickpeas were basically like your classic chana masala that is served at many Indian restaurants. It was flavorful, vibrant, and spiced nicely. No complaints here!
And the final vegetarian dish was the black daal. I almost always order lentils when I go to Indian restaurants. There is so much variation when it comes to lentils. I heard that there are over 400 types of lentils (daal) in India. This black daal was very creamy, and a tad thicker than I am used to. It was delicious. The only thing I would change is the amount of dairy that is in the dish. It was a little too much for me.
No one left hungry as you can see from the photos above. I would absolutely love to come here again and dive into these aromatic and beautiful dishes. One member of the family even mentioned that this was one of the best meals she had! I hope to continue sharing memories with my family while tasting delicious food.
